Rubber Mulch Installation & Site Preparation

Proper site preparation and installation help rubber mulch provide consistent coverage, drainage, appearance, and long-term performance.

Installation requirements differ between landscaping and certified playground-surfacing applications.

Before Installation

Review the project area and determine:

  • Intended application

  • Total square footage

  • Required installed depth

  • Existing surface conditions

  • Drainage

  • Border or containment requirements

Remove debris, unwanted vegetation, and unsuitable loose material before installation.

Grade & Drainage

Grade the site to create an even surface and direct water away from buildings, equipment footings, and areas where water could collect.

Rubber mulch allows water to drain through the surface, but it does not correct an improperly graded or poorly draining site.

Landscaping Installation

Rubber mulch used as landscape ground cover is typically installed approximately 1.5–2 inches deep.

A suitable landscape fabric may be installed beneath the mulch when additional weed control is desired.

Avoid placing excessive material directly against plant stems, tree trunks, building foundations, or other areas where clearance is needed.

Playground Installation

Certified playground nugget mulch must be installed throughout the playground’s designated use zone.

GroundSmart publishes these compacted-depth ratings:

  • 4 inches compacted: protection up to 10 feet

  • 5 inches compacted: protection up to 12 feet

  • 6 inches compacted: protection up to 16 feet

The selected depth must meet or exceed the playground equipment’s maximum fall height.

Borders & Containment

Loose-fill playground surfacing requires an appropriate containment system.

Borders help:

  • Keep mulch within the designated use zone

  • Maintain consistent depth

  • Define the play area

  • Reduce migration into surrounding spaces

  • Support cleaner transitions and access points

Confirm the border height and installed configuration are appropriate for the selected mulch depth.

Account for Settlement

Playground fall-height ratings are based on compacted depth.

Additional material may be needed during the initial installation to achieve and maintain the required compacted depth after settlement and use.

High-Use Areas

Mulch can become displaced beneath swings, slides, climbers, transfer points, and other high-traffic areas.

Wear mats can help reduce displacement and maintenance in these locations.

Spreading the Material

Move the bags as close to the installation area as site conditions safely allow.

Distribute the material evenly, then rake it to the required depth. Confirm depth throughout the entire project area rather than checking only one location.

Maintenance After Installation

Regularly inspect and rake loose-fill playground mulch to maintain consistent coverage.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Swing bays

  • Slide exits

  • Climbers

  • Transfer platforms

  • Entrances

  • High-traffic pathways

Top off the material when needed to maintain the required depth.
