Rubber mulch quantity depends on the project area, intended application, required installed depth, and package size.

Use this guide as a starting point for playground and landscaping projects.

Measure the Project Area

For a rectangular area:

Length × Width = Square Feet

Example:

30 feet × 20 feet = 600 square feet

For circular, curved, or irregular areas, divide the project into smaller measurable sections or contact us for help calculating the total area.

Landscaping Depth

Rubber mulch used as landscape ground cover is typically installed approximately 1.5–2 inches deep.

  • 1.5 inches provides economical decorative coverage.

  • 2 inches provides fuller coverage and additional weed suppression.

Avoid placing excessive mulch directly against plant stems, tree trunks, buildings, or other areas where clearance is needed.

Playground Depth & Fall Height

Certified playground nugget rubber mulch requires a compacted depth based on the equipment’s maximum fall height.

GroundSmart publishes the following ratings:

  • 4 inches compacted: protection up to 10 feet

  • 5 inches compacted: protection up to 12 feet

  • 6 inches compacted: protection up to 16 feet

The selected surfacing depth must meet or exceed the maximum fall height of the playground equipment.

Always follow the current product certification, manufacturer instructions, and applicable playground-safety requirements.

GroundSmart Package Sizes

GroundSmart bulk rubber mulch is available in 1.5-cubic-foot bags.

  • Half pallet: 25 bags / 37.5 cubic feet

  • Full pallet: 50 bags / 75 cubic feet

Estimated Coverage by Package

Landscaping Coverage

Installed Depth Half Pallet Full Pallet
1.5 inches Approximately 300 sq. ft. Approximately 600 sq. ft.
2 inches Approximately 225 sq. ft. Approximately 450 sq. ft.

Playground Coverage

Compacted Depth Half Pallet Full Pallet
4 inches Approximately 112 sq. ft. Approximately 225 sq. ft.
5 inches Approximately 90 sq. ft. Approximately 180 sq. ft.
6 inches Approximately 75 sq. ft. Approximately 150 sq. ft.

Coverage figures are estimates. Site conditions, settlement, compaction, grading, and installation requirements may affect the final quantity.

Calculate Cubic Feet

Use this formula:

Square Feet × Depth in Inches ÷ 12 = Cubic Feet Required

Example for 600 square feet at 1.5 inches:

600 × 1.5 ÷ 12 = 75 cubic feet

That project would require approximately one full pallet of GroundSmart rubber mulch.

Calculate the Number of Bags

Each GroundSmart bag contains 1.5 cubic feet.

Use this formula:

Cubic Feet Required ÷ 1.5 = Bags Required

Always round up to the next whole bag and then to the available half-pallet or full-pallet package.

Plan for Playground Maintenance

Loose-fill playground surfacing should be inspected and maintained regularly.

Rake displaced material back into high-use areas beneath swings, slides, climbers, and transfer points. Maintain the required compacted depth throughout the complete playground use zone.

Wear mats can help reduce displacement in frequently used areas.
