Wear Mat Placement & Installation Guide

Proper wear-mat placement helps protect loose-fill playground surfacing in frequently used areas while supporting a stable transition around the mat.

Identify High-Wear Areas

Look for surfacing displacement beneath swings, at slide exits, below climber entrances, around activity panels, along pathways, or wherever repeated movement creates depressions.

Prepare the Placement Area

Restore the loose-fill surfacing to its required installed depth. Level and stabilize the placement area so the mat can lie flat without rocking, curling, or creating raised edges.

Position the Mat

Center the mat over the primary wear area. Confirm that it does not interfere with equipment movement, use zones, accessible routes, borders, drains, or surrounding playground components.

Finish the Edges

Blend the surrounding loose-fill surfacing into the beveled mat edges to create a smooth transition. Do not cover the entire mat surface or create abrupt changes in elevation.

Inspect the Installation

Confirm that the mat lies flat, remains stable, and provides adequate coverage. Check the surrounding surfacing depth and correct any exposed base material or low areas.

Ongoing Maintenance

Inspect the mat and surrounding surfacing regularly. Reset shifted mats, redistribute displaced material, and maintain the required loose-fill depth throughout the playground.
