Playground vs. Landscape Rubber Mulch
Playground nugget rubber mulch and shredded landscape rubber mulch may look similar, but they serve different purposes.
The most important distinction is certification: playground surfacing must provide verified impact attenuation, while landscape mulch is selected primarily for appearance, durability, and ground coverage.
Playground Nugget Rubber Mulch
Playground rubber mulch is typically manufactured in bark-like nuggets and tested for use beneath playground equipment.
GroundSmart playground nugget mulch is:
-
IPEMA certified
-
Tested to applicable ASTM playground-surfacing standards
-
Rated for critical fall-height protection
-
Made from 100% recycled rubber
-
Suitable for playgrounds and landscaping
-
Available in multiple colors
-
Backed by a 12-Year ColorLockâ„¢ Limited Warranty
Playground Depth Requirements
Certified playground mulch must be installed and maintained at the compacted depth required for the equipment’s maximum fall height.
GroundSmart publishes these ratings:
-
4 inches compacted: protection up to 10 feet
-
5 inches compacted: protection up to 12 feet
-
6 inches compacted: protection up to 16 feet
Loose-fill surfacing must be maintained throughout the complete playground use zone.
Shredded Landscape Rubber Mulch
Landscape rubber mulch is typically shredded to resemble traditional wood mulch.
It is designed for decorative and low-maintenance ground coverage around:
-
Planting beds
-
Trees
-
Pathways
-
Commercial properties
-
Apartment communities
-
Schools and churches
-
Parks and public spaces
-
Homes and residential landscapes
Landscape rubber mulch is generally installed approximately 1.5–2 inches deep.
Can Playground Mulch Be Used for Landscaping?
Yes. Certified nugget playground rubber mulch can also be used as landscape ground cover.
Some customers prefer its bark-like nugget texture, available colors, durability, and package options for both playground and landscape projects.
Can Landscape Mulch Be Used Under Playground Equipment?
Do not use landscape-only shredded rubber mulch beneath playground equipment unless that specific product has the required playground-surfacing certification and fall-height documentation.
Appearance alone does not establish that a product is suitable for playground safety surfacing.
Key Buying Differences
Playground Nugget Mulch
Choose playground nugget mulch when:
-
Fall-height protection is required
-
The material will be installed beneath playground equipment
-
IPEMA or ASTM documentation is needed
-
The project requires a certified loose-fill safety surface
-
Bark-like nuggets are preferred for landscaping
Shredded Landscape Mulch
Choose shredded landscape mulch when:
-
The project is landscaping only
-
A shredded wood-mulch appearance is preferred
-
Playground impact protection is not required
-
Decorative ground coverage and reduced maintenance are the priorities
Color & Appearance
Both product types may be offered in multiple colors, but their textures differ.
Nugget mulch has larger bark-like pieces. Shredded mulch more closely resembles shredded wood mulch.
