The most important distinction is certification: playground surfacing must provide verified impact attenuation, while landscape mulch is selected primarily for appearance, durability, and ground coverage.

Playground Depth Requirements

Certified playground mulch must be installed and maintained at the compacted depth required for the equipment’s maximum fall height.

GroundSmart publishes these ratings:

  • 4 inches compacted: protection up to 10 feet

  • 5 inches compacted: protection up to 12 feet

  • 6 inches compacted: protection up to 16 feet

Loose-fill surfacing must be maintained throughout the complete playground use zone.

Shredded Landscape Rubber Mulch

Landscape rubber mulch is typically shredded to resemble traditional wood mulch.

It is designed for decorative and low-maintenance ground coverage around:

  • Planting beds

  • Trees

  • Pathways

  • Commercial properties

  • Apartment communities

  • Schools and churches

  • Parks and public spaces

  • Homes and residential landscapes

Landscape rubber mulch is generally installed approximately 1.5–2 inches deep.

Can Playground Mulch Be Used for Landscaping?

Yes. Certified nugget playground rubber mulch can also be used as landscape ground cover.

Some customers prefer its bark-like nugget texture, available colors, durability, and package options for both playground and landscape projects.

Can Landscape Mulch Be Used Under Playground Equipment?

Do not use landscape-only shredded rubber mulch beneath playground equipment unless that specific product has the required playground-surfacing certification and fall-height documentation.

Appearance alone does not establish that a product is suitable for playground safety surfacing.
