Certified Playground Surfacing

Playground rubber mulch must do more than provide attractive ground coverage. When installed at the required compacted depth, certified playground-grade rubber mulch provides impact attenuation beneath and around playground equipment.

Certification and fall-height claims apply specifically to the tested playground nugget product and required installation depth. Shredded landscape rubber mulch should not be used as certified playground safety surfacing.

Certified Fall-Height Ratings

Our certified playground rubber mulch has been tested at the following compacted depths:

  • 4 inches compacted: Up to a 10-foot fall height
  • 5 inches compacted: Up to a 12-foot fall height
  • 6 inches compacted: Up to a 16-foot fall height

Choose the installed depth based on the highest designated play-surface fall height for the equipment. Always follow the current product documentation and project requirements.

Testing and Certifications

Available certified playground rubber mulch may meet or carry documentation for:

  • IPEMA certification
  • ASTM F1292-19: Impact attenuation of playground surfacing
  • ASTM F3012: Loose-fill rubber playground surfacing
  • ASTM F3351: Required maintenance and impact-attenuation verification
  • ASTM F1951-21: Accessibility of playground surface systems
  • ASTM D2859: Flammability testing

Certification documentation applies only to the specific tested product and installation system. Product substitutions, insufficient depth, poor maintenance, or mixing incompatible materials may affect performance.

Installation and Ongoing Maintenance

Prepare a stable, properly drained site and use suitable borders to contain the loose-fill material. Install enough material to achieve the required compacted depth, accounting for initial settlement.

Inspect playground surfacing routinely and redistribute material displaced from high-use areas such as slide exits, swing bays, transfer points, and beneath climbing equipment. Add material when necessary to maintain the specified depth. Wear mats can help reduce displacement in frequently used areas, but they do not replace the required rubber-mulch depth.

Accessibility Considerations

Properly installed playground rubber mulch can support accessible playground design when used as part of a compliant surface system. Accessibility depends on installation, compaction, borders, transitions, maintenance, and the complete route—not the loose-fill material alone.
