Playground Border Layout & Quantity Guide

Accurate playground-border quantities begin with a complete perimeter measurement and a layout that accounts for entrances, ramps, corners, curves, transitions, and each border’s effective installed coverage.

Measure the Perimeter

Measure every straight run around the playground. For curves or irregular shapes, follow the planned border path rather than measuring directly across the area.

Add all measurements together to determine the total perimeter.

Use Effective Coverage

Divide the total perimeter by the effective installed coverage of one border section.

Quantity needed = Total perimeter ÷ Effective coverage per section

Always round the result up to the next whole border.

Example

A 240-foot perimeter using borders with 4 feet of effective coverage requires:

240 ÷ 4 = 60 border sections

Account for Entrances and Ramps

Subtract openings only after confirming their exact finished widths. Accessible ramps, gates, sidewalks, and poured-surfacing transitions may require different border pieces or installation details.

Plan Corners and Curves

Confirm whether the selected border can form curves or requires straight sections and defined corners. Tight curves may require shorter sections, additional anchors, or a different border material.

Include Project Overage

Include reasonable additional material for layout adjustments, field cuts when permitted, damaged components, future replacement needs, or measurement changes discovered during installation.

Confirm Hardware Quantities

Verify that every section includes the required stakes, rebar, connectors, or caps. Order additional approved installation hardware when required by the layout or manufacturer instructions.
