Commercial Playground Planning Checklist
Planning a commercial playground is easier when the major project requirements are considered before equipment is ordered.
Use this checklist as a starting point for your project.
Playground Users
- Determine the age range the playground will serve
- Estimate the number of children expected to use the playground
- Consider accessibility and inclusive-play needs
Site & Space
- Measure the available project area
- Confirm the playground equipment footprint
- Confirm the required use zone
- Review site access for installation and freight delivery
- Consider drainage, slope, and existing site conditions
Playground Equipment
- Choose equipment appropriate for the intended age range
- Review capacity, fall height, and play components
- Confirm the available mounting method
- Review product specifications and manufacturer resources
Safety Surfacing
- Choose an appropriate playground safety surface
- Determine the required surfacing depth
- Calculate material quantities for the complete use zone
- Consider playground borders and ADA access
Installation
- Determine whether professional installation will be used
- Review manufacturer installation instructions
- Plan for concrete or other mounting requirements
- Confirm site preparation requirements
Freight & Receiving
- Confirm the delivery address can accommodate a commercial semi-trailer
- Plan for unloading
- Arrange a loading dock and forklift when available
- If unloading by hand, plan for 2–4 capable adults and appropriate tools
- Be prepared to inspect the shipment before signing
Project Planning
- Establish a target budget
- Consider playground equipment, surfacing, installation, freight, and site work
- Review project timing and equipment lead time
- Confirm any local approval or permitting requirements
