Planning a Commercial Basketball Court

A successful basketball project begins with the site, intended users, available space, equipment configuration, and installation requirements.

Define the Application

Consider how the court will be used:

  • School or physical-education court

  • Public park or recreation facility

  • Commercial playground

  • Apartment or community court

  • Church or youth facility

  • Campground or resort

  • Indoor gymnasium

  • Multipurpose recreation space

Player ages, supervision, frequency of use, and desired level of competition will help determine the appropriate system.

Measure the Site

Document the available playing area and identify:

  • Court boundaries

  • Pole or base location

  • Backboard extension

  • Space behind the goal

  • Property lines and fencing

  • Walkways and accessible routes

  • Utilities and drainage

  • Vehicle and freight access

  • Overhead and underground obstructions

The support structure should remain outside the active playing area whenever possible, with adequate clearance around the system.

Select the System Type

Fixed-height systems provide rigidity and durability. Adjustable systems serve multiple age groups. Portable systems support shared indoor spaces and courts where equipment must be relocated.

Dual-sided systems can serve two playing areas from one central support structure when the site and product configuration permit.

Plan the Playing Surface

Confirm that the court surface is level, stable, properly drained, and suitable for the intended use. Permanent equipment may require concrete foundations or anchor systems that must be coordinated with the finished playing surface.

Plan for Safety Equipment

Review the need for:

  • Pole padding

  • Base padding

  • Backboard padding

  • Court striping

  • Fencing

  • Lighting

  • Accessible routes

  • Protective setbacks

Prepare for Delivery and Installation

Commercial basketball systems can include long, heavy components. Confirm freight access, unloading equipment, material storage, installer availability, concrete work, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions before delivery.
